Before you start

  • Course membership: instructors manage sources and results, students read released results.
  • For instructors, a plan for how much each graded source contributes to the course grade.

You are done when

  • For instructors, the Gradebook shows every intended source, the allocated weight, and the intended release state.
  • For students, released results show each source, its weight, and the current course grade.

If something goes wrong

  • Use Retry when the gradebook fails to load; do not change weights or the release state until the current server state is visible.
  • If a source cannot be saved because the 100% limit would be exceeded, lower another included weight first.

Understand grade sources

  • Assignment and exam sources are owned by their assignment or exam; results flow in from grading automatically.
  • Attendance sources stay synchronized with the selected Session. Manual sources hold instructor-entered results such as presentations or participation.
  • Each source has a weight between 0.01% and 100%. Sources included in the course grade share a 100% total, which the server enforces.
  • The current grade is a weighted average over graded, included sources only; a source without a result does not count against a student.

Manage sources and results as the instructor

  1. Open Courses, choose the course, then open Gradebook

The header shows the release state, the allocated weight, the source count, and management actions.

  2. Add a manual or attendance source

Choose Add manual source or Add attendance, enter the title, weight, and maximum score, and decide whether to include the source in the course grade now.

  3. Adjust weights and inclusion

Edit the weight or the Include in course grade toggle per source and choose Save. A save that pushes included weights past 100% is rejected.

  4. Enter manual results

Type scores directly into the Student results table for manual sources. Assignment and exam results come from their own grading surfaces, and attendance stays synchronized with Sessions.

  5. Remove only manual and attendance sources

Removal permanently deletes the recorded results of that source, and a confirmation states this. Assignment and exam sources are managed through their owning assignment or exam.

Release results deliberately

  1. Choose Release grades when results are ready

Release makes every included result, exam scores with their feedback, and the current grade visible to students at once.

  2. Use Hide grades to withdraw visibility

Hiding returns students to the not-released state without deleting any result.

Read released grades as a student

  • Until the instructor releases the gradebook, the page states that the course grade is not released and results remain private.
  • After release, you see each graded source, its weight, your result, and your current course grade.
  • Exam scores and per-response feedback also become visible in the exam review after release.
  • Only graded, released work is included in your current grade.
